The
Fellowship Programme is an excellent
example of a South-South initiative.
It is based on the voluntary contributions
of fellowships by leading training
institutions in order to strengthen
the human resource base of both PPD
and other developing countries.
Through
this carefully conceived programme,
PPD provides unique opportunities
for high-quality professional exchanges
among developing countries at very
reasonable costs. The PPD Secretariat’s
role is match the expertise of well-established
training institutions with the needs
and interests of qualified professionals.
Prospective fellows must provide proof
that the knowledge and skills they
seek to acquire will contribute to
improved programme design and management
in their own countries, with their
current employer. Final selection
of the candidates depends on the providing
institutions.
As
soon as the fellowship programme was
approved at the fourth Annual Board
Meeting in November 1998, the Cairo
Demographic Center (CDC) stepped forward
with the generous offer of four one-year
diploma courses in “Population
and Sustainable Development.”
This gesture generated much enthusiasm
and goodwill and helped the programme
off to a very good start.
The
real value of the fellowship Programme,
cannot be measured in financial terms
alone. Participants were asked to
evaluate the programmes they attended
and to prepare proposals on how they
plan to apply what they learned to
the situation in their own countries.
Many fellows stressed that they benefited
not only from the training curriculum
but also from the daily opportunities
for discussions and the exchange of
experiences with colleagues from other
developing countries.

Egypt offered fellowship to PPD member
Countries
PPD
in collaboration with Cairo Demographic
Center (CDC) provided one-year International
Fellowships Diploma Courses on demographic
and related family planning and reproductive
health since 1999. In 2010, CDC offered
6 fellowships to PPD Member countries.

received by Mr. Alpha Sey and Mr.
Haruna Sanyang from the Gambia, Mr.
Samindra Pratap Singh from India,
Mr. John Charles Luwa and Mr. Andrew
Kudeesa Ssewyowga from Uganda, Mr.
Jawad Mohammad Ali Al-Shaibani and
Ms. Karima Saleh Mahrouz from Yemen,
Mr Blessed Bukosi Gumbie from Zimbabwe,
Ms. Busi Malaza and Ms. Thandi Sibisi
from South Africa.

Akter from Bangladesh, Mr. Hamang
B.L. MANJANG and Mr Wally Hadre Ndow
from Gambia, Dr. Lam Khan Piang from
India, Mr. Ladji Binoko Sidibe from
Mali, Mrs. Plernta Ethisan Phanthong
from Thailand, Mr Dhikusooka Gyaviira
and Mr. Albert Franco Odongo from
Uganda and Mr. Ghamdan Mohammed Mofarreh
from Yemen recieved CDC's fellowships
in 2008.
PPD Fellowships in Collaboration
with ICMH, Bangladesh
Partners in Population and Development
(PPD), in collaboration with Institute
of Child and Mother Health (ICMH),
Bangladesh conducted South-South Fellowships
for the public health professionals
from PPD Member States to undertake
specialized training in the areas
of (i) Reproductive Health and Safe
Motherhood and (ii) Essential Newborn
Care at ICMH Campus in Dhaka from
15 to 24 February 2008 and from 23
to 28 March 2008 respectively.
ICMH, Bangladesh is one of the PPD
Network of Partner Institutions (PIs)
actively involved in PPD Capacity
Development initiatives in the Member
States. It is a premiere healthcare
institution of Bangladesh engaged
in providing Patient Care, conducting
Research and Training and imparting
Postgraduate Education in Medicine,
Surgery, Child Health, Obstetrics
and Gynecology.
