One
of the founder members (joined the
alliance in 1994), Indonesia has led
a number of initiatives to support
South-South cooperation, regionally
and inter-regionally. The Minister
of State for Population and Chairman
for BKKBN had acted as interim chair
and key initiator of the Alliance.

PPD
in collaboration with BKKBN organized
an one day National South-South workshop
in Jakarta on 10th July 2008.
•
Indonesia
organized International Conference
on Muslim Religious Leaders to Support
Population and Development to Achieve
MDGs in Sanur, Bali from 12 –
16 February 2007. The conference brought
together, among others, the senior
Muslim Religious Leaders, Islamic
Scholars and Jurisprudents from Muslim
Countries of Asia and Middle East,
who command profound respect and loyalty
of their followers in those countries,
to deliberate on how they can effectively
contribute to the attainment of MDGs.

PPD
in collaboration with National Family
Planning Coordination Board (BKKBN)
Indonesia organized a training in
Jakarta from 24-26th May 2005. It
was attended by 22 participants from
7 countries in Asia namely, Bangladesh,
Nepal, India, Pakistan, Philippines,
Thailand and China.
•
Indonesia
hosted the 8th PPD Board meeting in
2003.
•
In
1999, the Indonesian experience in
family planning was replicated in
Bangladesh.
•
In
1999, Indonesia led a project for
collaboration with Senegal, Mali,
and CAFS to use a family-centred approach
to improve existing programmes on
RH/FP including adolescent reproductive
health interventions.
•
Along
with Thailand’s National Family
Planning Programme, Indonesia’s
International Training Programme of
BKKBN initiated training programmes
in reproductive health to other countries
worldwide and organised study tours
for 3920 individuals from 92 countries.
Both countries helped to create a
framework for South-South collaboration
under which the Asia Regional Workshop
was established in April 1998.

At
the G15 meeting in Malaysia in 1990,
Indonesia offered to serve as the
core country for collaboration in
population, family planning and development
fields. Indonesia is home to the Director
of Governance, Finance and Administration,
2000-2001, Dr. Pudjo Rahardjo. He
was also the first PCC of PPD in Indonesia.
•
In
1996, Indonesia organised observation
study tours (OSTs) on IEC, FP and
Islam for Ethiopia, Pakistan, Malaysia,
Vietnam and the Philippines. In addition,
four representatives from Ghana, Malawi
and Tanzania were granted 3-month
internships on managing community-based
programmes in Indonesia.
•
Indonesia
signed an MOU with Morocco for exchange
visits between reproductive health
staff to improve the quality of their
respective family planning programmes.
Indonesia has demonstrated, through
its project in Java, the reduction
of maternal mortality by active management
of the 3rd stage of labour and by
the use of misoprostol to control
post-partum haemorrhage – a
technique that has potential for nationwide
application and relevance for other
countries as well.
