of Publication on Innovative
Experiences in Addressing Population
and Reproductive Health Challenges
in PPD Member States

launched its latest volume in
the Sharing Innovative Experiences
book series, Experiences in
Addressing Population and Reproductive
Health Challenges, which documents
10 case studies of innovative
practices and successful approaches
for tackling various aspects
of the population challenge.
The book was a collaboration
of the UNDP Special Unit for
South-South Collaboration, UNFPA
and PPD.

fighting against non-communicable
diseases” – says
PPD Chair

H.E.
Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Minister
of Health and Family Welfare
of India and Chair of PPD, said
his country faced the “triple
burden” of communicable
diseases, new and re-emerging
infections and the increasing
incidence of non-communicable
diseases. Due to alarm over
their impact, India held a national
summit on non-communicable diseases
after the April 2011 global
health ministers conference
on the issue.

Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization
(GAVI)

H.E.
Prof. A. F. M. Ruhal Haque, MP,
Member, PPD Board has been elected
as a member of the Governing body
of GAVI, an affiliation of World
Health Organization (WHO) under
the UN. He has been elected to
the prestigious UN post for three
year term. Dr. Haque will represent
11 developing countries of Asia
in GAVI Governing Board meetings
in Next three years.

Assembly concluded its three-day
High-level Meeting on AIDS, held
during 8-10 June 2010 at UN Headquarters
in New York. The Meeting was aimed
to shape the future global response.
Many members of the PPD Board
were in attendance, including
H E Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Minister
of Health and Family Welfare of
India and the Chair of the PPD
Board.

South Cooperation workshop was
held at the International Conference
Center, Hanoi, Viet Nam on May
19, 2011. The workshop was jointly
organized by PPD and General Office

of the Socialist Republic of Viet

version of the proposed “Reproductive
Health Bill”. Supportive

Group meets in London:

UK — On
the 2nd and 3rd of November,
2010, around 20 members of the
Systems Strengthening Working
Group (SSWG) gathered at the
offices of IPPF for a two-day
meeting to discuss ongoing work
and brainstorm ideas for future
work streams. The bulk of the
two-day meeting was devoted
to a brainstorming session where
members reviewed how the SSWG
could best conduct activities
to meet the needs of the Coalition
and the RH supplies community.

Welcomes the Head of the new UN
entity: UN Women

United Nations (UN) Secretary
General Ban Ki-moon announced
that former Chilean President
Michelle Bachelet will be the
first head of the new UN agency,
UN Women. Bachelet was elected
the first woman president of Chile
in 2006. PPD applauds this appointment
and wishes Ms. Bachelet as a successful
mandate.

Sethuramiah L.N. Rao, the new
Permanent Observer for PPD,
presented his letter of appointment
to UN Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon on 13 August 2010 at
United Nations, New York. PPD
has designated Dr. Rao to serve
as its Permanent Observer to
United Nations from 1 July 2010
onwards. He replaced Mr. Jyoti
Shankar Singh, who has served
in this position from 2003 to
2010.

Resource Development for Health
Professionals in PPD Member States:
Contribution from India
New
Delhi, India —
India
provided 10 fellowships to PPD
member countries namely Bangladesh,
Nigeria, The Gambia, Vietnam,
Thailand and China, for a one
year Postgraduate Diploma in Public
Health Management. The course
is being held at the National
Institute of Health and Family
Welfare (NIHFW), India. The course
fees, accommodation, meals together
with allowances of Rs. 5000 for
each participant are fully taken
care by the Government of India.

The
Ministry of Health of Uganda and

Africa Regional Office hosted
the 11th Annual Membership Meeting
of the Reproductive Health Supplies
Coalition at the Sheraton Kampala
Hotel from May 27th to 28th. This
meeting marks the first time the
Coalition has held its annual
membership meeting outside of
Europe or North America. Uganda
is the first African government
to join the Coalition.

Indonesia was announced on 6 April,
2010. More than 100 participants
from different organization, government

program. H.E Dr. Endang Rahayu

Lady of Uganda Lauds the AFP Project

The
First Lady of Uganda, H.E Janet
Museveni, has welcomed the Advanced
Family Planning (AFP) Project,
which will help decrease maternal
deaths in Uganda. She noted that
family planning, which is not
only about spacing children but
also preparing for birth, is a
big component in maternal health.
Advance Family Planning (AFP)
launched in Uganda in March2010.
