PPD Board and Executive committee met at Pretoria South Africa
Pretoria, South Africa — PPD organized its 16th Annual Board meeting and 18th Executive Meeting in Pretoria South Africa with remarkable participation of its Board member. H.E. Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Honorable Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India and Chair of PPD Board presided over these events. This year Board meeting, ornamented with active participation of 9 Ministers (PPD’s Board Members) from different member countries, representatives from different donor agencies, Partner Country Coordinators and Government delegation from Sri Lanka.

Launching of Publication on Innovative Experiences in Addressing Population and Reproductive Health Challenges in PPD Member States
Pretoria, South Africa — PPD launched its latest volume in the Sharing Innovative Experiences book series, Experiences in Addressing Population and Reproductive Health Challenges, which documents 10 case studies of innovative practices and successful approaches for tackling various aspects of the population challenge. The book was a collaboration of the UNDP Special Unit for South-South Collaboration, UNFPA and PPD.

Pretoria, South Africa — The government of South Africa and PPD organized the International Conference on “Population Dynamics, Climate Change and sustainable Development”. H. E. Ms. Bathabile Olive Dlamini Member, PPD Board and Honourable Minister for Social Development, Government of the Republic of South Africa inaugurated the conference in the presence ministers from PPD Member States, parliamentarians, policy-makers, heads of leading international organizations, NGOs and the member of civil-society.

New York, USA — Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade were awarded the South-South Award 2011 for their outstanding contributions to improving and replicating the implementation of the health-related Millennium Development Goals and beyond the national level.

“India fighting against non-communicable diseases” – says PPD Chair
New York, USA — H.E. Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Minister of Health and Family Welfare of India and Chair of PPD, said his country faced the “triple burden” of communicable diseases, new and re-emerging infections and the increasing incidence of non-communicable diseases. Due to alarm over their impact, India held a national summit on non-communicable diseases after the April 2011 global health ministers conference on the issue.

PPD Board Member of Bangladesh elected as a Governing Body Member of Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI)
Joypur, India — H.E. Prof. A. F. M. Ruhal Haque, MP, Member, PPD Board has been elected as a member of the Governing body of GAVI, an affiliation of World Health Organization (WHO) under the UN. He has been elected to the prestigious UN post for three year term. Dr. Haque will represent 11 developing countries of Asia in GAVI Governing Board meetings in Next three years.

PPD Membership participation nearly universal at the United Nations’ High-level Meeting on HIV/AIDS in New York
New York, USA - The UN General Assembly concluded its three-day High-level Meeting on AIDS, held during 8-10 June 2010 at UN Headquarters in New York. The Meeting was aimed to shape the future global response. Many members of the PPD Board were in attendance, including H E Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare of India and the Chair of the PPD Board.

South–South Workshop in Vietnam:
Hanoi, Vietnam - A South – South Cooperation workshop was held at the International Conference Center, Hanoi, Viet Nam on May 19, 2011. The workshop was jointly organized by PPD and General Office for Population-Family Planning (GOPFP), Ministry of Health, Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. Dr. Nguyen Ba Thuy, Vice Minister, Ministry of Health was present as the chief guest at the workshop.

Hanoi, Vietnam - PPD delegation had a meeting with Dr. Duong Quoc Trong, General Director of General Office for Population-Family Planning and Board Member, PPD Board. Mr. Jooseery refreshed Dr. Trong on the purpose of the mission, shared the objectives of the South –South Cooperation workshop and necessity of forming a National Task Force in Viet Nam.

New York, USA — PPD organized jointly a breakfast meeting with the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh on 14th April 2011 at the premises of the Bangladesh Mission in New York. The meeting was organized in the context of the 44th session of the Commission on Population and Development for the participants from PPD Member Countries, who were attending the Commission, as well as for representatives from the Permanent Missions of PPD countries located in New York. The Mission of Bangladesh graciously hosted the PPD meeting.

Reproductive Health Bill in Philippines approved
The House of Representatives Committee on Population and Family Relations of the Government of the Philippines recently approved the consolidated version of the proposed “Reproductive Health Bill”. Supportive Legislators who attended the meeting were principal authors Edcel Lagman, Janette Garin, Luzviminda Ilagan, Kaka Bag-ao and Walden Bello, Committee Vice-Chairs David Kho and Rosenda Ocampo, and Committee Members Catalina Leonen-Pizarro, Antonio Tinio, Mark Sambar, Salvador Escudero, Teddy Casino, Reena Obillo, Imelda Dimaporo, Walden Bello, Joey Zubiri, Teddy Baguilat, Orlando Fua and Marc Douglas Cagas IV. Rogelio Espina presided the meeting.

Taicang, China — PPD and CTC, China jointly organized the Consultative meeting on Networking among partner Institute. It was opened by Mr. Wang Jianfeng, Acting Mayor of Taicang Municipality. The participants of this meeting discussed important issues pertaining to the progress made in integration of PPD Generic Modules into existing curricula of PIs; the success and weakness in the process of integration, the opportunities and challenges for the forward in strengthening the PIs network.

New York, USA — The United Nations Population Fund, welcomed the United Nations Secretary-General's announcement naming Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin as Executive Director of UNFPA, to succeed Thoraya Ahmed Obaid once her tenure ends on 31 December.

London, UK — On the 2nd and 3rd of November, 2010, around 20 members of the Systems Strengthening Working Group (SSWG) gathered at the offices of IPPF for a two-day meeting to discuss ongoing work and brainstorm ideas for future work streams. The bulk of the two-day meeting was devoted to a brainstorming session where members reviewed how the SSWG could best conduct activities to meet the needs of the Coalition and the RH supplies community.

PPD Welcomes the Head of the new UN entity: UN Women
New York, USA — United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced that former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet will be the first head of the new UN agency, UN Women. Bachelet was elected the first woman president of Chile in 2006. PPD applauds this appointment and wishes Ms. Bachelet as a successful mandate.

Courtesy call of the new Permanent observer of PPD at the United Nations to the UN Secretary General
New York, USA — M. Sethuramiah L.N. Rao, the new Permanent Observer for PPD, presented his letter of appointment to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 13 August 2010 at United Nations, New York. PPD has designated Dr. Rao to serve as its Permanent Observer to United Nations from 1 July 2010 onwards. He replaced Mr. Jyoti Shankar Singh, who has served in this position from 2003 to 2010.

Human Resource Development for Health Professionals in PPD Member States: Contribution from India
New Delhi, India — India provided 10 fellowships to PPD member countries namely Bangladesh, Nigeria, The Gambia, Vietnam, Thailand and China, for a one year Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health Management. The course is being held at the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW), India. The course fees, accommodation, meals together with allowances of Rs. 5000 for each participant are fully taken care by the Government of India.

Reproductive Health Supply Coalition’s first Annual meeting held in Kampala
Kampala, Uganda — The Ministry of Health of Uganda and Partners in Population and Development, Africa Regional Office hosted the 11th Annual Membership Meeting of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel from May 27th to 28th. This meeting marks the first time the Coalition has held its annual membership meeting outside of Europe or North America. Uganda is the first African government to join the Coalition.

AFP project Launched in Indonesia
Jakarta, Indonesia — AFP collaborative effort aimed at up scaling family planning in Indonesia was announced on 6 April, 2010. More than 100 participants from different organization, government officials, eminent experts in Reproductive Health and journalists attended the project launching program. H.E Dr. Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, MPH, Minister of Health, Indonesia inaugurated this event. Dr. Nazrul Islam of PPD Secretariat attended this event.

First Lady of Uganda Lauds the AFP Project
Kampala, Uganda — The First Lady of Uganda, H.E Janet Museveni, has welcomed the Advanced Family Planning (AFP) Project, which will help decrease maternal deaths in Uganda. She noted that family planning, which is not only about spacing children but also preparing for birth, is a big component in maternal health. Advance Family Planning (AFP) launched in Uganda in March2010.
