PPD Fellowships at Cairo Demographic Centre
Cairo, Egypt —
PPD in collaboration with Cairo Demographic Center (CDC) has been strengthening demographic and related family planning and reproductive health expertise of the professionals from Member States through One-year International Fellowships Diploma Courses every year since 1999 at CDC’s own premises in Cairo, Egypt. Since early 1999, CDC has been awarding 5 fellowships to PPD for the professionals of its Member States to pursue the studies at CDC.

Union of African Population Studies (UAPS) Conference

The Regional Director and Programme Officer attended the Union of African Population Studies (UAPS) Conference, December 10 – 14, 2007. UAPS is a pan-African non profit scientific organization whose main aim is to promote the scientific study of population in Africa. The meeting brought together eminent international researchers in the field of population, reproductive health and development.

South-Africa joins PPD

 PPD mandate for the promotion of Reproductive Health, Population and Development through South-South Cooperation is gaining positive image and this has been reinforced by the interest of Developing Countries to join the alliance. At the Annual Board Meeting 2007 of PPD, South-Africa expressed its intention to join the alliance which was approved unanimously by all Board Members

China Double its Annual Membership Contribution to PPD
Rabat, Morocco —
At the Twelfth Executive Committee Meeting and Board Meeting of PPD, H.E. Mr. Zhang Weiqing, Chair of PPD Board announced that China will double its annual membership contribution $20,000 to $40,000 from January 2008. China had in the past singed 3 Memorandum of Understanding with PPD for the member countries on Capacity Building, Reproductive Health Commodity Supply and Transfer of Technology.

Women Deliver Global Conference

Women Deliver marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of the global Safe Motherhood Initiative in Kenya at London's Excel Conference and Exhibition Centre on October 18 to 20, 2007. More than 1,500 politicians including Ministers from Africa and Asia, human rights activists, NGOs, faith based organizations, health professionals and economists met to assess progress made in preventing maternal deaths and promoting child survival.

An International Workshop on Infrastructure Design and Equipment for Reproductive Health Service Station was organized by China Training Centre (CTC) of Reproductive Health and Family Care sponsored jointly by the Ministry of Commerce, People’s Republic of China and NPFPC of China from 10-23 September 2007 in Taicang and Jiangsu province of China. Thirty six participants from 18 developing countries of Africa, Asia and Middle-East participated in the workshop.

UNFPA Strategic Plan for 2008-2011 - "To deepen, intensify and enhance South-South cooperation"

The UNDP/UNFPA Executive Board, at its second regular session for 2007 ( 10-14 September 2007, New York), endorsed UNFPA's Strategic Plan for 2008-2011 which focuses on the three areas of population and development, reproductive health and rights, and gender equality towards achieving the ICPD goals and contributing to the Millennium Development Goals. It also endorsed UNFPA's proposed global and regional programme for 2008-2011, which is to be implemented in line with the Strategic Plan.

Networking and Advocacy towards addressing HIV/AIDS Pandemic through South-South Cooperation during 4th IAS Conference

PPD Executive Director Mr. Harry Jooseery conducted extensive networking and advocacy campaign during the 4th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention on addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in developing countries through South-South Cooperation. He met and exchanged views with prominent leaders and experts on pragmatic strategies in preventing and scaling down the prevalence of the scourge of the disease.
