National Workshop on National support for South–South Cooperation in Population and Developmentt held in New Delhi India
New Delhi, India —
PPD and the Ministry of Health and Family welfare, Government of India and National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW) jointly organized the “National South-South Workshop in Population and Sustainable Development” on December 11th 2008. The overarching objective of the workshop and the subsequent discussions was to inform the participant of the scope of strengthening the South –South cooperation.

International Forum on “ICPD @ 15: PROGRESS AND PROSPECTS”
Kampala, Uganda —
PPD in collaboration with the Government of Uganda organized the International Forum on “ICPD @ 15: Progress and Prospects which was the first of such events on celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of ICPD and was attended by about 225 Participants. The purpose of the International Forum was to critically analyze the progress made in the implementation of ICPD Program of Action.

PPD Honors its Pioneers

For the first time ever PPD honoured the pioneers of ICPD, PPD and South-South Cooperation. At the Opening Ceremony of the International Forum on “ICPD @ 15: PROGRESS AND PROSPECTS”, PPD honoured Six distinguish person by conferring a Commemorative Plaque and a Certificate of Excellence. H.E. Mrs. Janet Museveni, Honourable First Lady of Uganda handed over the Commemorative Plaques and PPD Chairperson H.E. Dr. Li Bin handed over the Certificate of Excellence to the awardees.

Partners Country Coordinator (PCC) Meeting at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, Uganda
Kampala, Uganda —
Partners in Population and Development (PPD) organized the PCC meeting in Collaboration with, Population Secretariat (POPSEC) Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of Uganda on 23rd November 2008. The meeting was opened by, Mr. Harry Jooseery, Executive director of PPD and attended by the international experts and PCCs from PPD member country. The objective of the meeting was to discuss issues for strengthening South -South cooperation through the creation of National Support Structure in each PPD member countries.

Partners Country Coordinator (PCC) Meeting at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, Uganda

Mr. Harry Jooseery, the Executive Director ,PPD fielded a mission to Brazil and met with the Brazilian Minister of Health H.E. Mr. Jose Gomes Temporao and the Minister of Technical Cooperation H.E. Dr. Paul Wangner de Miranda in their respective offices in Brasilia. This is a trip to expand the PPD’s geographical coverage in South America.

Participants Selected for PPD-INAS Fellowships for the year of 2008 - 2010

The Fellowship Program is an excellent example of a South-South initiative. It is based on the voluntary contributions of fellowships by leading training institutions in order to strengthen the human resource base of both PPD and other developing countries. Japanese Delegation Visits PPD Secretariat
Dhaka, Bangladesh —
A Japanese delegation, led by Mr. Hiroyasu Bessho, comprised of seven students of Global Politics at Hosei University, Japan visited the PPD Secretariat on their study tour on September 09, 2008. They spent a significant amount of time at the Secretariat, with the Executive Director, Mr. Harry Jooseery and the PPD staff, learning about PPD and its activities.

National South-South Workshop on Population and Sustainable Development held in Banjul

Partners in Population and Development and the National Population Commission, Government of the Republic of The Gambia jointly organized the “National South-South Workshop on Population and Sustainable Development” on September 4, 2008. The purpose of the workshop was to advocate and garner support from key stakeholders in the field of reproductive health, family planning and population for promoting South-South Cooperation as a modality for change and for creating a national support structure in The Gambia.

PPD Updates Board Member in Yemen on PPD Activities and Action

Executive Director, Mr. Harry Jooseery, accompanied by Mr. James Biswas fielded a mission to Yemen on 23-25 June 2008. During this high level mission, Mr. Jooseery met with Honorable Mr. Ahmed Ali Bourji, Secretary General, Technical Secretariat, National Population Council and PPD Board Member, and also Mr. Abdul-Malik Sharafuddin, Technical Advisor and Director General of Planning and Resource Mobilization, Technical Secretariat of National Population Council and the Partner Country Coordinator for Yemen, and other high officials from the Ministry of Health of Yemen.

Advocacy and Resource Mobilization Campaign in Japan during TICAD IV Meeting

PPD calls for Increased Donor Funding to Family Planning (FP) and Reposition of FP in National Development Agenda

Consultative Meeting of Experts and Member of International Programme Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Strategic Programme Development
Bangkok, Thailand —
PPD has a new Strategic Business Plan (SBP) for (2008-2011) which was developed after a long process of consultations with Board Members, Partners Country Coordinators (PCCs), international experts and stakeholders. This SBP was discussed and approved at the PPD Board Meeting held in Rabat, Morocco in November 2007. For the implementation of the SBP, in collaboration with the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, Government of Thailand, PPD organized a three-day Consultative Meeting of Experts to identify specific area of programme interventions and avenues for their implementation.

Accelerated Momentum in South-South Cooperation Countries Commit Enhanced Technical and Financial Support to PPD
Government of India reiterated its wide ranging supports to reinforce to PPD and intensify South-South collaboration among member states. India offered trainings in its premier institutions for capacity development of professionals from the member states, particularly from the African member states. India also offered specialized training in RH Commodity logistics management, an area in which India is privileged with comparative advantage.

Eastern Africa Reproductive Health Network (EARHN) Operationalizes its 2008 – 2012 Strategic Plan
Kampala, Uganda —   It will be recalled that soon after it’s founding as a South-South Initiative to promote RH, Population and Development, EARHN undertook to formulate its first Strategic Plan in the year 2000 for the period 2001 – 2005. With changing global, regional and national RH environment, EARHN sought to review its strategic directions in order to align itself with the changing paradigm as well as positioning itself to achieve the ICPD PoA and the MDGs. In this regard, in December 2007, PPD ARO together with the partners including DSW as well as Population Action International and RH Supplies Coalition supported and facilitated EARHN to develop a new Strategic Plan to guide its work for the period 2008 – 2012.

Reproductive Health Advocacy Network for the SADC Region starts in earnest
Johannesburg, South Africa —    The Chief Director, Population Department of the Ministry of Social Development of the Republic of South Africa hosted the Regional Director of PPD ARO Dr. Jotham Musinguzi in a preparatory meeting for the formation of an RH Advocacy Network for the SADC Region. The meeting took place at Southern Sun Hotel, Johannesburg on February 20, 2008. The meeting was attended by PPD ARO Programme Officer, Mr. Patrick Mugirwa. Other attendees were Ms. Christa Kruger, Ms. Olga Mabitsela, Jeny Djidja and Mr. Mpho Nenweli all from the Directorate of Population, Ministry of Social Development.

South Africa hosts the Second Meeting of the Technical Committee on Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa, February 2008
Johannesburg, South Africa —     The Republic of South Africa hosted an African Union (AU) event – the Second Meeting of the Technical Committee on Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa. The meeting was held in Kopanong Conference Centre in Johannesburg on February 18 – 19, 2008. This was a follow-up meeting to the AU Ministers of Health meeting held in Abuja in January 2005 where the AU Ministers of Health adopted a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa which was developed in line with the recommendations of the AU Heads of State and Government during the July 2007 Summit in Accra, Ghana.
