a National Task Force

The
Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare, Government of the People’s
Republic of Bangladesh, in collaboration
with Partners in Population and
Development (PPD) is organizing
a National South-South Support
Structure Workshop in Dhaka. The
purpose of the Workshop was to
introduce the Bangladesh Task
Force members and help them to
understand the concept of south-south
cooperation, as well as to build
national ownership for South -South
Cooperation and synergize efforts
to map-out the way forward.

Collaboration: Advance Family
Planning Project (AFP) launched

The
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School
of Public Health, the David and
Lucile Packard Foundation, USAID
and the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation announced on 18 November
at the ICFP conference a new three-year,
$12 million project to advance
reproductive health and family
planning efforts in regions with
the greatest need. The project,
Advance Family Planning, will
focus on sub-Saharan Africa and
Asia.

from 59 countries attended the
Conference from 15 to 18 November,
and shared the latest scientific
findings and refocus the world’s
attention on family planning’s
contribution to development. The
ceremony was opened up the First
lady Mrs. Janet Museveni, who
called upon for a total support
of all men’s involvement
in Family planning as well as
reminding fellow women (Nurses
and Mid wives) to save the lives
of the mothers who visit the health
centers.

UN General Assembly on 12-13 October
2009. Opening the event the UN
Secretary General Ban ki-Moon
said the ICPD Programme is critical
to achieving the Millennium Development
Goals. It is especially important
for goal number 5: to cut maternal
mortality and achieve universal
access to reproductive health
care.

These announcements came out in

Conference on Africa Development)
in Gaborone, Botswana between
21 and 23 March 2009. Adjacent
to this, they also provided US$
100 billion to IMF and US$ 3 billion
to Bank Recapitulation Fund of
the IFC most of which would be
channeled for stimulating national
economies of Africa.

BKKBN Training Centers

Center of International Training
and Collaboration (PULIN) BKKBN
has conducted the dissemination
of generic module on Population,
Reproductive Health, and Gender
as developed by PPD. The dissemination
was done in 23 February 2009 and
attended by 35 participants representing
six BKKBN Provincial Training
centers and 2 training divisions
of BKKBN central office. The participants
comprise of head of the BKKBN
provincial training center and
trainers from BKKBN central office
and provincial office.

Welcomes Restoration of U.S. Funding
On
Firday 23 January, UNFPA, the
United Nations Population Fund,
issued a press release applauding
a statement from United States
President Barack Obama restoring
U.S. funding for UNFPA's operations.
President
Obama said: "I look forward
to working with Congress to restore
U.S. financial support for the
U.N. Population Fund. By resuming
funding to UNFPA, the U.S. will
be joining 180 other donor nations
working collaboratively to reduce
poverty, improve the health of
women and children, prevent HIV/AIDS
and provide family planning assistance
to women in 154 countries."

her statement to the regular session
of the UNDP/UNFPA Board, on 20
January 2008, UNFPA Executive
Director Ms Thoraya Obaid reported
on the financial situation of
UNFPA. Last year the provisional
core contributions from donor
Governments totaled $430 million,
an increase of more than $10 million
from the previous year. It was
however $50 million less than
expected, due to unfavourable
exchange rates coinciding with
late payments from some major
donors.
