Annual
Ministerial Review at ECOSOC in Geneva
Geneva, Switzerland —
The
Ministerial Declaration adopted by
the 2009 high-level segment of the
Economic and Social Council at the
United Nations in Geneva, which was
presented by the President of the
Council and adopted by the participants
at the concluding session calls for
greater attention to be given to efforts
to reduce maternal mortality and endorses
universal access to reproductive health,including
voluntary family planning. The document
sets as one of the major goals of
the international community:
"achieving
universal access to reproductive health
by 2015, through increased political
leadership at all levels, allocation
of domestic and donor resources and
emerging innovative financing and
by strengthening basic infrastructure,
and specific health interventions,
including voluntary family planning,
emergency obstetric care and skilled
birth attendance."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
The
high-level segment of ECOSOC was attended
by several ministers and senior officials
as well as leaders of major UN agnecies,intergovernmental
organizations and NGOs. Its themes
was Implementing the internationally
agreed goals and commitments in regard
to global public health. In a statement
delivered during the high-level segment,
Harry Jooseery, Executive Director
of the Partners in Population and
Development (PPD) drew attention to
the urgency and importance of achieving
universal reproductive health as a
vital step towards achieving ICPD
goals and MDGs by 2015, decried the
lack of adequate funding for family
planning within the framework of reproductive
health and emphasized the need to
integrate RH and HIV/AIDS programmes
and services where ever possible.He
also underlined the importance of
the gender perspective in formulating
and implementing all global health
programmes,including family planning
and reproductive health.
PPD
was represented at the meeting by
Mr Jooseery and Jyoti Shankar Singh,
Permenent Observer of PPD to the UN.
