PPD
represented at UNDP/UNFPA Board meeting
New
York, USA —
In
her statement to the regular session
of the UNDP/UNFPA Board, on 20 January
2008, UNFPA Executive Director Ms
Thoraya Obaid reported on the financial
situation of UNFPA. Last year the
provisional core contributions from
donor Governments totaled $430 million,
an increase of more than $10 million
from the previous year. It was however
$50 million less than expected, due
to unfavourable exchange rates coinciding
with late payments from some major
donors. The non-core contributions
income was around $300 million, an
increase of $50 million from 2007.
The total income from contributions
was thus $ 730 million in 2008. Ms
Obaid did not expect any decrease
in its income in 2009; and though
she did not say it, US is expected
to resume making a contribution to
UNFPA in 2009. She also reported on
the regionalization of the UNFPA structure,
whereby the regional divisions of
UNFPA have been or are being moved
to their respective regions.
Summing
up the debate after her statement
and in specific response to the comments
made by the PPD Permanent Observer,
Ms Obaid referred to the important
role of PPD as a networking organization
in South-South cooperation. The President
of the Board commented on the shortfall
in funding for family planning which
was specifically raised by the Permanent
Observer and expressed the hope that
this issue would be given serious
attention by everybody concerned.
The
Board received a briefing on the UNFPA
evaluation policy and approved a number
of country programmes.
PPD
was represented at the Board by its
Permanent Observer to the United Nations
Mr Jyoti Shankar Singh.
