Partner Institutions in Dhaka,
Bangladesh
Partners
in Population and Development
(PPD) organized a “Consultative
Meeting on Networking among
Partners Institutions”
from 28 July - 30 July 2008
with assistance from UNFPA,
involving Heads of 16 Partner
Institutions (PIs) from Bangladesh,
China, Egypt, India, Indonesia,
Kenya, Morocco, Senegal and
Thailand. The opening ceremony
of this three daylong consultative
meeting was attended by Mr.
A.K.M. Zafar Ullah Khan, Secretary,
Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare, Government of Bangladesh,
Mr. Harry Jooseery, Executive
Director, PPD, Mr. Pornchai
Suchitta, Deputy Representative,
UNFPA, Bangladesh, Mr. Rabbi
Royan, Senior Technical Advisor,
UNFPA, New York and Ms. Quamrun
Nahar Khanam, Partners Country
Coordinator (PCC) and Joint
Secretary, Ministry of Health
and Family Welfare, Government
of Bangladesh.
Ms.
Quamrun Nahar Khanam, the Partners
Country Coordinator (PCC) for
Bangladesh delivered the welcome
address. Executive Director
of PPD in his speech emphasized
on the importance of building
partnerships among developing
nations and their institutions
to meet the challenges of current
times.

Honorable
guest Panels of the Consultative
Meeting
The
objective of the meeting was
to learn from experiences of
Partner Institutions, discuss
on ways and means Generic Modules
(GMs) could be effectively intregrated
into existing curriculum of
Partner Institutions .It was
concurred that most Partner
Institutions have either already
reviewed the Generic Modules
or are in the process. It was
agreed that adaptation of the
Generic Modules to the local
context, training of trainers,
development and exchange of
content material among Partner
Institutions, exchange of trainers
and collaborative programs of
joint research were key areas
that need attention and affirmative
action in order to institutionalize
the PPD’s Generic Modules.
The meeting welcomed the idea
of establishing a web-based
network, through yahoo groups,
blogs, Microsoft SharePoint’s
and Skype, among other technologies,
to strengthen PI networking
by facilitating the exchange
of ideas, information, research
findings, training materials,
curricula and syllabi, staff
profiles and capacities, institutional
resources, course announcements,
schedules, fellowships, etc.
International
Fellowship Training Course
In Bangladesh on Essential
Newborn Care (ENC) and Infant
and Young Child Feeding (IYCF)
Institute
of Child and Mother Health
(ICMH) Bangladesh, in collaboration
with Partners in Population
and Development, organized
an International Fellowship
Training Course on Essential
Newborn Care (ENC) and Infant
and Young Child Feeding (IYCF),
for Health Managers, Doctors,
Nurse and Midwives from 2
– 11 August, 2008. The
thrust of the course was on
neo-natal care and safe motherhood.

The participants of the course
included 12 health care professionals
from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia
and Mali. The course was inaugurated
by Professor M.A. Faiz, Director
General, Health Services,
Government of the People’s
Republic of Bangladesh and
Professor MQK Talukder, Chairman,
Bangladesh Breast Feeding
Foundation (BBF) was also
present as a special guest.
Mr. Amadou Moreau from PPD
made a presentation on “South-South
Approach in Strengthening
Health Programs in Developing
Countries”. The participants
also visited the PPD Secretariat
during their stay in ICMH,
Dhaka and had a discussion
on PPD activities with the
PPD staff.
International
Fellowship Course Jointly Organized
by PPD and BKKBN
The
Fellowship Program is an excellent
example of a South-South initiative.
It is based on the voluntary
contributions of fellowships
by leading training institutions
in order to strengthen the human
resource base of both PPD and
other developing countries.
Through this carefully conceived
program, PPD provides unique
opportunities for high-quality
professional exchanges among
developing countries at very
reasonable costs.
An
International Fellowship Course
on “Behavior Change
Communication in Family Planning
and Reproductive Health: the
Indonesia Experience”
was organized for member states
of PPD at the Indonesian National
Family Planning Coordinating
Board (BKKBN), Jakarta, Indonesia
from 6 August- 4 September.
Thirteen
PPD nominated participants from
Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya and
Yemen attended the program.
BKKBN implemented the fellowship
program to support participants
to attend the Observation Study
Tour (OST) conducted by Center
for International Training and
Collaboration, BKKBN. The program
is the First batch of the Third
Country Training Program (TCTP)
on Behavior Change Communication
(BCC).
National
South-South Workshop on Access
to Reproductive Health for the
Achievement of ICPD PoA and
MDGs
Partners
in Population and Development
in collaboration with the Ministry
of Social Development, Government
of the Republic of South Africa
organized National South-South
Workshop on Access to Reproductive
Health for the Achievement of
ICPD Plan of Action and MDGs
held in Pretoria, South Africa
on 29 August .The overarching
objective of the workshop and
the subsequent discussions was
to inform the participant of
the scope of strengthening the
South –South cooperation.
The Executive Director of PPD
and the Regional Director of
IPPF Africa Region Mr. Tewodros
Melesse together with Chief
Director of the Department of
Social Development and PCC for
South Africa Mr. Jacques van
Zuydam and WHO and UNFA Country
Representatives for South Africa
were present in this workshop.

The Executive Director of PPD
briefed the participants on
the initiative taken by PPD
to build the national structure
in its Member States to promote
South-South Cooperation. The
Executive Director also met
H.E. Dr. Jean Swanson-Jacobs,
Honorable Deputy Minister of
Social Development, Government
of the Republic of South Africa
and she pledged to set up a
National Task Force to reinforce
the South-South Cooperation
in South Africa and in the region.
