PPD Board and Executive Committee meetings

PPD Board and Executive committee meetings were held on 23rd to 26th November 2008 respectively at Royal Imperial Hotel Kampala. Board members who are Ministers and their representatives, Partner Country Coordinator (PCCs), the UNFPA Representative, the Executive Director of PPD and representatives of donor agencies attended the meetings.

A new Executive Committee was elected for next three year at the thirteen Annual Board meeting of PPD as follows:

1. H.E Anbumani Ramadoss ,Honorable Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India (Chair)

2. H.E. Dr. LI Bin Honorable Minister, National Population and Family Planning Commission of China (Vice Chair).

3. Dr. Boniface Omuga K’ Oyugi , Chief Executive Officer , National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development, Kenya (Secretary)

4. Prof. Dr. Nabiha Gueddana, Director General, National Office of Family and Population, Tunisia (Treasurer).

The Board Member adopted the Kampala Declaration and admitted two new members to PPD namely, Ethiopia and Ghana.


International Forum on ICPD @ 15: Progress and Prospects

225 Participants from different countries attended the International Forum that PPD organized from 24th to 26th November 2009 at Kampala which coincided with its Board Meetings. The purpose of the International Forum was to critically analyze the progress made in the implementation of ICPD Program of Action and examine the way forward in the light of emerging issues. Eminent experts, who were involved in the preparation of ICPD in 1994, were present and shared their views, namely Sara Siems, Professor Dr. Haryono Suyono, Mr. Jyoti Sing, Professor Dr. Nabiha Gueddana, Dr. Nafis Sadik and Professor Fred Sai.

The Forum was formally inaugurated by H.E. Mrs. Janet Museveni, Honourable First Lady of the Republic of Uganda in the presence of PPD Chairperson and Minister of National Population and Family Planning Commission of China H.E. Dr. Li Bin, UNFPA Deputy Executive Director Mrs. Purnima Mane and PPD Executive Director Mr. Harry Jooseery. After two days of intense deliberations participants adopted the Kampala Declaration, in testimony of their commitment to pursue the goals of ICPD and meet emerging challenges ahead. PPD Honours its Pioneers

PPD acknowledged the immense contribution of its founding father and in the light of the commemoration of its 15 years anniversary, handed symbolic Plaques and a Certificates of Excellence to the followings:

Professor Dr. Haryono Suyono was the Secretary General of Partners in PPD from 1995 to 1998. For his lifelong achievements in the Population and Development sector he received numerous prestigious awards. Professor Haryono Suyono is currently the Chairman of Damandiri Foundation of Indonesia.

Mr. Jyoti Shankar Singh is now live in the USA. He is the Permanent Observer to the UN for Partners in Population and Development. He played a key role in the formation of PPD and has been contributing to PPD and South-South Cooperation since 1994.

Professor Dr. Nabiha Gueddana is form Tunisia, who is currently PPD Board Member and was the first Chair from 1995 to 1998. Professor Gueddana is recognized globally for her significant contribution in promoting of South-South Cooperation and ICPD Program of Action.

Dr. Nafis Sadik is well-known for her dynamism and guiding force in the field of population and Development. It is under her leadership that the South-South Initiative was included in the ICPD Plan of Action in 1994, following which PPD was formed. Her special assistance to PPD especially in the early years was instrumental in the growth of PPD. She is from Pakistan.

Dr. Sara Seims is from USA and currently she is the Director of the Population Program of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Her commitment to promote the ICPD agenda and South-South Cooperation is unfailing. Her support to PPD since 1994 has been remarkable and instrumental in putting PPD on the rail.

Dr. Steven W. Sinding is one of the founding fathers of PPD and contributed immensely in providing both financial and technical support to PPD especially in the early years with Rockefeller Foundation. Dr. Steven Sinding is now a Senior Fellow at the Guttmacher Institute and an independent consultant.


India pledges to set up a National Task Force
for South- South Cooperation

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in collaboration with National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW) and support from PPD organized a workshop on “National Support for South-South Cooperation in Population and Development” on December 11th 2008. The overarching objective of the workshop and the subsequent discussions was to inform the participants of the scope of strengthening the South –South cooperation. The Workshop was attended by Ms. Aradhana Johri, Partner Country Coordinator (PCC) and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India, Mr. Harry S. Jooseery, Executive Director, Partners in Population and Development, Mr. Nesim Tumkaya, Country Representative, UNFPA, Prof. Deoki Nandan Director, NIHFW, Delhi, India and representatives of different ministries, NGOs, civil societies and stakeholders.

At the workshop, participants agreed on a Terms of Reference for the constituting a Task Force to group of ministries , NGOs , civil society and all stakeholder in the program of Reproductive Health , Population and Development . The PCC has been designated as a chair of the Task Force and Mr. Deoki Nandan as its Secretary. The Task Force will meet quarterly in 2009 to discuss the issues pertaining to South-South Cooperation as a modality for the promotion of Population and Development program.


Ten PPD Fellows graduated in Cairo

Ten fellows from Member countries of PPD namely Ms. Fahmida Alam and Dr. Shahin Akter from Bangladesh, Mr. Hamang B.L. Manjang and Mr. Wally Hadre Ndow from Gambia, Dr. Lam Khan Piang from India, Mr. Ladji Binoko Sidibe from Mali, Mrs. Plernta Ethisan Phanthong from Thailand, Mr Dhikusooka Gyaviira and Mr. Albert Franco Odongo from Uganda and Mr. Ghamdan Mohammed Mofarreh from Yemen completed their one-year International Fellowships Program in Cairo Demographic Center (CDC). PPD anticipates that these fellows would contribute substantially to family planning and reproductive health programs in their respective countries.

PPD provides this Fellowship in collaboration with CDC in order to strengthen the demographic and related family planning and reproductive health program in developing countries. PPD takes the opportunity to thank the Director and staff of CDC for their support and assistance.
