AFP SMART diffusion workshop held from 12th-16th of August 2019 at Mbale Resort Hotel, Eastern Uganda.

With support from the Advance Family Planning (AFP) project, Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU) and Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office (PPDARO), conducted the AFP SMART diffusion workshop on August 12-16 at Mbale Resort Hotel. The objectives of the workshop were to:

  1. Introduce the AFP SMART Advocacy approach to partners
  2. Help partners understand AFP SMART and how to apply it in developing advocacy strategies
  3. Help partners develop advocacy strategies that their respective organizations can pursue to diffuse the AFP SMART strategy.

Over ten organisations, predominantly those implementing FP advocacy especially for young people, participated in the diffusion workshop.  These include; Population Services International (PSI)-Uganda, Options UK, Impact Uganda, Nurses Union, PATH, CEHURD, UNASO, PHAU, UYAHF, UYAFPAH and World Vision.

Participants were taken through the AFP SMART advocacy approach, during which they practically developed Family Planning SMART advocacy strategies that are in line with their respective organisation core implementation. Key areas that were tackled included; the definitions and key concepts in advocacy, the attributes of an advocate, why advocacy is critical in Family Planning programming, the types of quick wins and the AFP SMART approach in nine steps.
