Meeting of the Senegal Parliamentary Committee of Health for follow up of the NEAPACOH commitments of 2017 organized on 5 July 2018 at Dakar Senegal.

PPD ARO in partnership with the National Assembly of Senegal Organized a NEAPACOH country specific commitments follow up workshop on 5 July 2018 at the Ngor Diarama Hotels in Dakar Senegal. These were commitments of the Government of Senegal in matters of reproductive health and family planning. The meeting brought together representatives of governments, civil society organizations and religious and customary communities to discuss the commitments of the National Assembly of Senegal made at the December 2017 NEAPACOH meeting. PPD ARO was represented at this meeting by Patrick Mugirwa, Programme Manager, Achilles Kiwanuka and Betty Oburu, Programme and Finance Officers respectively.

The official opening ceremony of the workshop was presided by the 4th Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Senegal, Hon. Abdoulaye Makhtar DIOP, in the presence of the Honorable Aminata GUEYE (in photo) the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Population, Social Affairs and National Solidarity, Mr. Patrick Mugirwa, from PPD-ARO, Dr. Marème DIA NDIAYE, Head of FP and MCH Division of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. Over twenty parliamentarians, members of the Committee of Health of the Parliament of Senegal attended the meeting.

The workshop had majorly four objectives, including; assessing the progress made, the challenges and the lessons learned on the implementation of the commitments of the National Assembly of Senegal taken at the NEAPACOH meeting of December 2017; recalling the commitments of the Government of Senegal made at the London FP2020 Summit in July 2017 and share the progress and challenges of implementing these commitments; begin the preparation of the report on the commitments of December 2017 and those to be taken for 2018/19 and finally; institutionalize NEAPACOH in the National Assembly of Senegal. The day’s sessions focused on the objectives as well as presentation on the mandate of PPD, the general environment and context of FP and SRH in the country and Senegal’s place in the regional parliamentary networks as well as advocacy opportunities on the different fora.

During his welcome remarks, President Abdoulaye Makhtar Diop said he was very honoured to welcome PPD and NEAPACOH to Senegal to follow up on the Senegalese government’s commitments on reproductive health and family planning. He reiterated that adherence to this general context of RH/FP reform is a determining factor in Health and Sexual Rights and Reproductive Health (SRHR). Under the PES, the provision of universal health coverage (CMU) for reproductive health and family planning provides impetus to the achievement of the SDGs.
