Uganda joined the Alliance in 1998.
- Partners in Population and Development (PPD), in collaboration with Population Secretariat, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of the Government of Uganda organized a workshop on “South-South Cooperation in Sustainable Development” on 22nd of February 2007 at the Grand Imperial Hotel, Kampala, Uganda.
- Uganda was represented at the highest level of the 1994 ICPD and it had set up a national workshop to disseminate the ICPD Programme of Action.
- Uganda has been implementing a number of South-South initiatives in terms of technical exchanges, study tours and training opportunities. The government has also enhanced its collaboration with NGOs in advancing population and development related issues.
- In regard to South-South collaboration, Uganda has made significant contributions. It has established a database of national consultants who can provide technical support for South-South activities and programs. It presented a progress report on South-South activities during the visit of the PPD Executive Director.
- Uganda has been organising training exercises for other countries. For instance, there have been regional training activities in safe blood supply and transfusion services for Anglophone African countries. TASO and Aids Information Centre provided training to 2 institutions in the African region on VCT and home based care.
- Uganda has also hosted the ExCo meeting in April 2004 and arranged a field visit to MidMay Clinic which has offered to train locally and to set up similar centres in neighbouring countries. Uganda, in turn, has benefited from fellowships from Indonesia and Bangladesh.
- Uganda is widely acclaimed as a success story for its phenomenal reduction of the HIV/AIDS incidence and prevalence rates. A paper entitled “Meeting the Challenges of HIV/AIDS: Sharing Experiences and Lessons Learned from Uganda” was presented during the Conference on South-South Co-operation into the 21st century Meeting Reproductive Health, Population and Development Challenges in Africa and Asia, held at the UN University, Tokyo in 1999. It has offered assistance to neighbouring countries in setting up HIV/AIDS training programmes. Through the Population Secretariat, Uganda hosted the visit of Partners’ Regional Director of Sub-Saharan Africa to document Centres of Excellence and training opportunities in HIV. As part of its efforts to contain the HIV problem, the country has organised study tours on HIV AIDS programme for delegations from India and South Africa as well as fielded 2 missions headed by Zambia Minister of Health and Tanzanian Prime Minister.
- Uganda has been consistently undertaking effective measures to improve the health sector. It launched the EARHN Second Strategic Plan at a workshop in November 1999 and hosted EARHN meeting in 2000. With support from PathFinder and under the auspices of EARHN, this member country organised and conducted a regional study tour to Zambia and South Africa to look at RH programmes. It has also held 2 national RH Advisory Committee meetings to discuss issues of the girl child education initiative, and the strategic expansion and marketing of EARHN.
