Egypt is a founder member of PPD and joined the alliance in 1994.
Egypt was the site of the 1994 ground breaking ICPD and its Programme of Action.
- PPD in collaboration with Ministry of Health, Egypt organized an International Workshop on Real Life Experience Sharing on Consulting for Reproductive Health during 02-03 July 2007 in Cario.
- Cairo Demographic Center (CDC) offered 5 one-year fellowships to PPD for 2007 academic session on “General Diploma in Demography”.
- The Cairo Technical Office (CTO) also hosted the PPD’s “Programme Preview Workshop” during 17-20 September 2002, presenting the success stories in the implementation of reproductive health programmes in 16 countries worldwide, Tunisia, Morocco, Mexico, Colombia, China, Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Panama, Ecuador, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Peru and Egypt.
- Egypt played a crucial part in establishing the Arab Network for South-South cooperation in population and reproductive health in 2001 with members from Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Sudan, and Yemen in addition to PPD member countries, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt.
- Egypt boasts a number of highly recognised interregional training institutions in population and related fields such as the Regional Centre for Training in Family Planning and Reproductive Health (RCT), the International Islamic Centre for Population Studies and Research and the Cairo Demographic Centre (CDC). The CDC pursues a full-time programme of training, research and technical assistance and offers a 10-month certificate course as part of the Global Programme of Training in Population and Sustainable Development sponsored by UNFPA from 1993 to 2000. The Centre ran a series of training courses under the PPD GLP: Quality of Care in Reproductive Health (3-18 June 2001), Strategic Leadership and Management in Reproductive Health in Developing Countries (14-29 October 2001) and Communications and Advocacy in Developing Countries (7-22 April 2002).
- Egypt established the Cairo Technical Office in 2000 to provide technical assistance to the MENA region and neighbouring collaborating countries. The CTO implemented 14 international training courses for 145 participants from 18 developing countries in the region on:
- Policy Analysis training: — CTO organised 7 training courses for 72 participants from 17 Anglophone African and Arab countries, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Mali, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Morocco, Gambia, Palestine, Kenya, Tunisia, Yemen, Ghana, and Syria.
- Essentials of Health Care Quality Management training: One training course for 19 participants from 7 Anglophone African and Arab countries, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Tunisia, Syria, Egypt, and Jordan.
- Pharmaceuticals logistics training: 5 training courses for 66 participants from 11 Anglophone African and Arab countries, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Tunisia, Morocco, and Syria
- RH Programme supervision: 1 training course for 11 participants from 8 Anglophone African and Arab countries, Uganda, Jordan, Sudan, Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, and Palestine
An evaluation workshop was organised to obtain feedback on the transfer of knowledge and skills acquired during CTO training and its impact on RH quality services. It was attended by CTO graduates, Ford Foundation, State of Arab League, Cairo Demographic Centre and other national institutions.
