Mexico in 2003 led a partnership to improve quality RH and maternal health through training in the Dominican Republic and Honduras.
- In 1999, Mexfam, an NGO providing FP/RH programmes was one of the 4 centres identified by PPD to coordinate South-South partnerships in the region, which led to the establishment of an internet-based information-sharing network for adolescents in 2001.
- Under its nationwide 1995-2000 RH Programme initiated by the Ministry of Health, Mexico implemented a South-South cooperative programme with 14 countries within the Central/South American and Caribbean region. The programme benefited about 236 participants in the region.
- Along with Belize and Guatemala, Mexico participated in a tri-national agreement to improve RH in their border areas in 1997.
- The National Institute of Nutrition of Mexico and the Latin American Network for Research & Training in Human Reproduction continue to provide research opportunities to young biomedical and social scientists in the region.
- With support and technical assistance from UNFPA, Mexico designed a 3-year South-South collaborative programme in 1996 for population and health officers, health operational personnel, women’s health advocates and NGO representatives. The project benefited 83 participants from the region.
- An important initiative by the Ministry of Health was the setting up of the Mother and Child Friendly Hospital which promoted breastfeeding practices, contraception after birth, training of healthcare personnel in neonatal and peri-natal care.
