Morocco


As a founder member (joined PPD in 1994), Morocco is very proactive in the MENA and African region with initiatives that support South-South collaboration and technical assistance in RH/FP programmes.

  • Morocco hosted the XII Annual Board Meeting of PPD in Rabat on 22 November 2007.
  • PPD in collaboration with the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco organized an International Forum on “Universal Access to Reproductive Health for the Attainment of ICPD goals and MDGs” from 20 to 21 November 2007 in Rabat.
  • PPD and Ministry of Health, Morocco jointly organized an International Workshop on “Consulting for Results” for the PPD Consultants from the Francophone countries in Rabat, Morocco from 5 to 7 December 2007. The workshop was attended by sixteen mid to senior level professionals in reproductive health, population and development field from four selected francophone member countries of PPD namely Mali, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia. The training was conducted in French.
  • Morocco led the initiative for a Francophone network that includes Tunisia, Mauritania, Niger, Mali, Senegal, Benin and Burkina Faso. It also established a twinning arrangement with Indonesia.
  • The Maghreb Research Network for research in the field of RH was established in 1998. Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia agreed to start the network’s activity by a multi-centric study on STDs and infertility and behavioural patterns of origin. The partnership with Tunisia in 2003 led to the establishment of a regional laboratory and the launch of strategies to curb STDs in pregnant women and women in general.
  • A high-level workshop hosted by the Population Directorate of the Moroccan Ministry of Health was held in Morocco in 1998 on Formulating Project Proposals for South-South Collaboration, within the framework of strengthening the PPDs activities in North Africa and the Middle East. Representatives from WHO, UNFPA, EU, JSI/USAID, GTZ, The Futures Group, and from 20 local and international institutions attended the workshop.
  • Morocco provided technical assistance to Mauritania in 1999 on strengthening RH services, Emergency Obstetric Care and twinning arrangements to reduce maternal mortality.
  • The Moroccan national experts, along with their respective institutions dealing with population/FP and reproductive health, have been documented in the Morocco country profile prepared with support from the PPD Secretariat and MSH.
