Tunisia


Tunisia, a founder member (joined PPD in 1994), has a National Office on Family and Population (ONFP) which is another UNFPA Centre of Excellence.

Tunisia was the first Chair of PPD during 1995-1998, followed by Honorary Chair of during 1998-2002.

  • A National workshop on South-South Cooperation in Reproductive Health and Population was organized by National Family and Population Board (ONFP), Tunisia in collaboration with Partners in Population and Development (PPD) in Tunis on September 4, 2007.
  • It hosted the PPDs 1st Executive Committee and 7th Board meetings in 1996 and 2002 respectively.
  • Tunisia has achieved major gains in population programmes in general and RH and family planning in particular. Tunisia has one of the most progressive pro-choice policies as related to women’s health, empowerment, abortion and poverty eradication.
  • Tunisia National Office for Family and Population ONFP) has reinforced its activities in South-South cooperation with French-speaking African and Arab countries.
  • In 1994, Tunisia created a National Solidarity Fund, through a Presidential decision, for a development strategy targeting 114 rural areas.
  • Through the initiative of PPD, Tunisia held the first Francophone African Days for South-South collaboration for Reproductive Health and Development in 1997. Delegates from Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia participated.
  • In 1999, Japan launched an agreement with Tunisia to lend support to South-South activities between Tunisia and its African neighbours. The Centre for International Training of the ONFP organised 16 training sessions in contraceptive technology and programme management for doctors, midwives and managers from 13 countries.
  • The ONFP hosted then First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton at the Reproductive Health Clinic in Kairouan for a roundtable discussion on the South-South programmes of ONFP. Tunisia also hosted parliamentarians from France and Scandinavia. The country has been very proactive in its activities on South-South cooperation:
    • Technical assistance to Benin and Burkina Faso to design FP and RH project management.
    •  Study tours for 132 delegates of decision makers and programme officers, 57 from 13 African countries, 47 from 7 Arab states.
    • Training in prenatal care and mobile clinic care techniques to reduce maternal mortality
    •  In 1994, 1996 and 1997, offered internship training for over 200 participants
    •  Initiated bilateral cooperation agreements with Benin, Burkina Faso and IPPF Africa Region
    •  Partnership with Morocco for a Regional Laboratory on STDs
    •  ONFP entered into partnership with NGOs on EC
    •  Field visits by Tunisian experts to transfer expertise to Guinea-Bissau, Togo, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Djibouti, Niger and Benin
    •  Conducted 3 RH training courses in Niger, Algeria and Mauritania.
    •  Kairouan Clinic offers practical training to midwives from Benin, Togo, Uganda, Senegal, Togo and Ivory Coast.
