Colombia


Colombia joined the alliance in 1994.

  • As one of the founder members, Colombia is implementing programmes to promote sexual and reproductive health for the last three decades. The country is considered to be a world pioneer in this field, it provides assistance to several countries in the region through PROFAMILIA.
  • Colombia is the home of the 2nd Regional Desk Officer for Latin America, Mr. Hernando Clavijo.
  • PROFAMILIA acts as the lead institution in a partnership with Family Planning Associations in Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela to provide training in ASRH in other countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
  • In October 1998, along with Ipas, Medecins Sans Frontieres, and Si Mujer, PROFAMILIA filled gaps in reproductive health services by offering contraceptive counselling and methods, screening for cervical cancer and treatment for STIs to people displaced by Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua.
  • In 2000, 18 Colombian and Mexican institutions documented smart solutions addressing adolescent SRH challenges.
  • Colombia has been organising workshops to upgrade the counselling skills of health personnel to deal with issues of sexuality and other emerging reproductive health issues. It also designed an orientation model that incorporates sexual and reproductive health.
