12th November 2019, Nairobi, Kenya: PPD and UNFPA organized a session with High-Level Leaders on South-South and Triangular Partnership to accelerate the ICPD Promise at Nairobi Summit on ICPD 25.

Objective of the session was –

To scale up south-south and triangular cooperation to accelerate the ICPD agenda through the exchange and utilization of SS/T platforms to harness and bolster political commitment.

  1. To generate commitments from specific countries on the Panel and to provide clarity on the nature of commitments Member-States have made in accelerating SSC for the goals at the Second High-Level UN Conference on SSC in March 2019.
  2. To reinforce the crucial role that South-South Cooperation is being asked to play in the achievement o f the ICPD PoA and the sustainable development goals.  South South Cooperation (SSC), together with other forms of partnerships, is viewed in the Agenda 2030 as the goal that will help achieve all the other goals.The Sustainable Development Goal 17 calls on Member-States to,“Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development,” particularly focusing on the critical role of South-South and Triangular Cooperation in achieving agenda 2030. It also includes these among its targets: “Enhance North-South, South-South and triangular regional and international cooperation on and access to science, technology and innovation and enhance knowledge sharing” (17.6); Enhance international support for implementing effective and targeted capacity-building … through North-South, South-South and triangular cooperation (17.9).
  3. To enable experts to discuss operational issues as to how to translate into action the commitments from the Ministers and other senior government officials.
